Denmark
is a country in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe. It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. The mainland is bordered to the south by Germany; Denmark is southwest of Sweden and south of Norway. Denmark borders both the Baltic and the orth Sea. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea, and these waters are also known as the Danish straits. The Faroe Islands and Greenland are autonomous provinces of Denmark with home rule.
About Denmark
Denmark is a democracy with constitutionally guaranteed liberties. That is why no Danish government can interfere
with absolutes such as freedom of expression, assembly and religion without falling. That does not prevent part of the
population – probably the large majority – from believing that the cartoons were unnecessarily provocative and should
never have been published, but it was not possible for the government to ban or take legal proceedings against them.
From wild and woolly to sleek and civilised.
The littlest and southernmost of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark offers a beguiling mix of lively cities and rural countryside. Ancient castles, ring forts, jazz festivals, the sleekest modern design you'll ever see and the people who invented Lego - who could ask for more?
Danish Vikings once took to the seas and ravaged half of Europe, but these days they've filed down their horns and forged a society that is seen as a benchmark of civilisation, with progressive policies, a commitment to free speech and a liberal social-welfare system.
